Camping and Hiking in the Adirondacks

Camping and Hiking in the Adirondacks

Camping in the Adirondacks is a real adventure, whether you enjoy sleeping under the stars or in a rustic cabin with all of the amenities. Nothing beats sitting around a campfire singing songs with your loved ones or roasting marshmallows and telling stories. Your camping experience in the Adirondack Mountains can be as primitive or as luxurious as you like as there are amenities to suit every taste and budget.

Hiking is also a favorite activity that brings tourists to the Adirondacks. Those who are especially adventurous can join the 46ers club by hiking to the summit of all 46 peaks in the area. There are also numerous, less adventurous hiking experiences waiting for you in Lake Placid and the Adirondack Mountains.

Johns Brook Lodge

For a genuine wilderness experience, pack your hiking gear and head for the Johns Brook Lodge in Johns Brook Valley. This full-service summer hotel, which is actually more like a bunkhouse, will provide a roof over your head, meals, and the camaraderie of other hikers. Open the end of June until Labor Day, the Johns Brook Lodge can accommodate up to 28 hikers. If you would rather pitch a tent and sleep under the stars, you can do so nearby, however, if the Johns Brook Lodge sounds like what you’re looking for, book early as the rooms are often booked up to a year in advance.

Family Hiking and Camping

For families who like to hike together, there are numerous hiking trails and smaller peaks in the Adirondack region. Consider going in the fall when the fall foliage offers the most beauty. In addition, the cooler weather will make hiking more pleasant for the entire family and you won’t have to deal with as many insects or bug bites like you might have in the summer. You can also camp at one of several campsites; either pitch a tent or rent a cabin. Families who travel in an RV will have a memorable vacation in the majestic villages of Lake Placid, Lake George, or Saranac Lake. There are also several fall festivals during this time of year that are family friendly and perfect for the budget conscious.

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park at Paradise Pines

For a family friendly camping resort, consider Yogi Bear’s and stay in a cabin complete with kitchen and bathroom or pitch your tent at one of the large campsites. This resort, nestled along the Schroon River, not far from Lake Placid, offers all the amenities you desire while catering to the interests of children as well. Open from the beginning of May until October 20, families will be entertained while they enjoy the simple things nature provides.
